Mountain Retreat
Seattle, WA
Conceived as an assemblage of forms fitted to the hillside, this 5,000 sf mountain retreat recalls cabins and mining buildings that are the result of an accretion of additions over time. The building's massing orients main living spaces to a spectacular northerly view, and shelters a south-facing courtyard from prevailing winds.
Sliding panels in the dining room's glass walls open to connect it to the courtyard and a patio on the opposite side. Ledgestone walls, heavy timber lintels and columns, and weathering steel roofs further evoke traditional materials and techniques of the area's mining heritage.
